It's Saturday, and I'm hanging with Evan Davison at my place for the first time in almost two years. I get a phone call from a friend to let me know that RC Martinez, also known to the hacker community as GodFix has passed away. RC was a friend to many, and a special friend to me. He was also a member of the SkyDogCon staff, and spent many years helping us with our endeavour to reach out to the hacking community. He was a kind soul. I was able to spend time with him for his birthday a few months ago, and had an absolute blast with him. When I was in the middle of moving out of my house, having lost my job, my dog, and with a lot of turmoil, RC came over and sat on my couch and made me laugh. We talked about a variety of topics, and when he went home, I felt so much better about things.</i></span><div><i style="font-family: courier;"><br /></i></div><div><i style="font-family: courier;">For those that knew RC, he was an oddball. But he was OUR KIND of oddball. Always helpful. He'd welcome you with an awesome hug and a smile. He was a Defcon goon, and a damn fine one at that. He assisted in the hacker community, and always had a good story to pass on during our infamous chat sessions.</i><div><span style="font-family: courier;"><i><br />RC will be missed by lots of people, in a large set of groups. Particularly I will miss him, he's been in my life for quite a while. That damn green hat is at my house. The last time he was over he accidentally left it, and we talked about meeting up to get it back to him. I've seen him at so many events wearing it... Watched him goon for hours with it firmly riding his dome. Brother, I wish that we had been able to arrange for me to hand it back to you, to get another hug, handshake and a smile. <br /><br />I've made some contact with his family and will be trying to do everything we can to help, so if RC touched your life please keep an eye out for information from myself and his other friends so that we can help where we can.<br /><br />RC, Brother goon, friend, and wonderful man, Rest in Peace. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeie-Mm2Q6GRvrRtJS_Ya_nhCHvgBqtsulV_FFQsn63xtuak94pAeVJxDulV-LSTkpeqoDwHuM-lEuuAmr_c3Iv-Bm7hfbRrWZJddHhP6nyfEhnGkAbzqdc3AOh4_1Ms8k28ZStprhvvA/s1600/blackbadgeModelF.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="358" data-original-width="493" height="232" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeie-Mm2Q6GRvrRtJS_Ya_nhCHvgBqtsulV_FFQsn63xtuak94pAeVJxDulV-LSTkpeqoDwHuM-lEuuAmr_c3Iv-Bm7hfbRrWZJddHhP6nyfEhnGkAbzqdc3AOh4_1Ms8k28ZStprhvvA/s320/blackbadgeModelF.jpg" width="320" /></a>One of the biggest frustrations for me as a badge designer last year was that I missed the opportunity to re-program a lot of the 2016 badges with firmware so that people could continue to use their badge at home post-con.<br />
<br />
So let's fix that and a few other things in the days up to con!<br />
<h2>
Show me the code!</h2>
It's out there on <a href="https://github.com/redvers/sdc2017a/blob/master/sdc2017a.ino" target="_blank">github</a> for your perusal but I will be flashing it all con long. Find me!<br />
<br />
<h2>
New Features?</h2>
<ol>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiS3EqQgVlofsMawFKGUaGtbxEyIkEOSA2gRFQPAOBw4N16zOBNB1Op-AKZVbIU_lQpFEwhUMmyT8clUM8rxYZUVqDBgTvOcitLrAjdiyLJ19UigOUZaFUaYw_HtTpHXwj4eqmSDc-btdY/s1600/b2.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1136" data-original-width="640" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiS3EqQgVlofsMawFKGUaGtbxEyIkEOSA2gRFQPAOBw4N16zOBNB1Op-AKZVbIU_lQpFEwhUMmyT8clUM8rxYZUVqDBgTvOcitLrAjdiyLJ19UigOUZaFUaYw_HtTpHXwj4eqmSDc-btdY/s320/b2.png" width="180" /></a>
<li>Configure WiFi. If you press the "B" button during the first 5 seconds of boot, the badge will bring up its own AP and captive portal to let you move it onto the WiFi Network of your choice.</li>
<li>UDP Baby! When we got on-site last year we got a little skittish about how the network gear was going to handle UDP through firewalls and NAT so we switched to TCP.<br /><br />After much testing, we're back as nature intended. </li>
</ol>
<br />
<ol>
</ol>
<h2>
Protocol the same as last year?</h2>
Pretty much, except now the transport is UDP instead of TCP and there is a secret function hidden in there which nobody should pay any attention to at all.<br />
<br />
There's another write-up of the protocol on my <a href="https://evil.red/posts/sdc2017a-released/" target="_blank">website</a><span id="goog_1610506254"></span><a href="https://www.blogger.com/"></a><span id="goog_1610506255"></span> which you are welcome to peruse. The badge-server is Internet connected and already up 24/7 so feel free to beat on it some.<br />

Final Words</h2>

SDC#7 LoungeCon Workshop Series:</h2>
<div>
Saturday, 21 October come learn why "There are no cable ties in space!" from Redvers Davies.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<h2>
No Cable Ties in Space, You Say?</h2>
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://s3.amazonaws.com/wireharness/articles/knotsonmars_5.jpg?1442434674" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://s3.amazonaws.com/wireharness/articles/knotsonmars_5.jpg?1442434674" data-original-height="436" data-original-width="650" height="214" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Yeah, I'm on Mars - Oh Yeah!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
In spaceflight, your cabling is subject to a massive amount of vibration so your cables have to be held securely. When you use cable ties to secure cables you have to make them tight which damages the cables being secured, especially when accelerating to leave the Earth's gravity.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Cable lacing is used because the knots don't have to be tight as the cord itself is sticky. Lacing cord's wax covering keeps everything secure without the risk of having to be stupid tight.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Cable ties are evil. They were designed to save time, not produce the best result. Like most things in life, investment in doing it right at the beginning can reap dividends in maintenance later on.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<h2>
Why Cable Lace On Earth?</h2>
<div>
Many reasons. First and foremost, learn a skill that has been passed down by generations of linemen and telco operators. It's a part of our heritage as hackers.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiq23fbEdXmGlTBKJwgNno9rIEAI7oJAbUmG6afyKA3fearj049nQaB4_1d1QRQTHnwf2X3B-JyQbD_ti3fympaSKCBi_8fhK-tqGyV7JZY8sVKU5C9DR947Rv45JJNWSqauCHfzq2lYmA/s1600/cablepn003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="690" height="260" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiq23fbEdXmGlTBKJwgNno9rIEAI7oJAbUmG6afyKA3fearj049nQaB4_1d1QRQTHnwf2X3B-JyQbD_ti3fympaSKCBi_8fhK-tqGyV7JZY8sVKU5C9DR947Rv45JJNWSqauCHfzq2lYmA/s400/cablepn003.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Credit: reddit /u/perpetualjon</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
Secondly, it's damn useful. You can do a cable-run of tens, or even hundreds of cables in such a way that you can identify both ends of one cable just by observation. It's extendable, you can add cables to a bundle indefinitely as your needs grow.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Finally, we all know that 'Upper Management' doesn't always understand what we do so they judge us on what they understand. If they see crappy cabling, they assume crappy management of your systems.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If your cabling looks like it could have a starring role on /r/cableporn, then clearly you are the infrastructure genius that they have been waiting for to throw money at.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So, get money thrown at you. Start cable lacing!</div>
<div>

Titled "Body Channel Communication" David will be speaking on how the human body can be used as a transmitter.<br />
<br />
<h3>
Abstract:</h3>
<div>
Body Channel Communication (BCC) is possible because over a range of frequencies the human body exhibits low impedance but does not strongly radiate. This body channel can be used to transmit data through the body to an external system by e.g. capacitive coupling. It's proposed mainly for collection of data from medical sensors. However there are numerous security and privacy applications. RFID technology has some similar applications but BCC has broader application and potentially greater security. I will discuss the basic technology and several unique applications.</div>
<h3>
About David:</h3>
<div>
Physicist with years of coding experience, entrepreneur, inventor. Interested in AI, security and privacy.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<h2>
BACKGROUND</h2>
2017 has been anything but boring or expected! In preparing for this year's event, the core team was challenged to find a theme that could inspire and prepare attendees for what has been planned. Some years are easier than others...this year was...difficult.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
...the interest in the infosec industry is growing rapidly and blurring the line between professional vs. enthusiast, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maker_culture" target="_blank">"hacker/maker culture"</a> and community.</blockquote>
Its not that there were a lack of ideas. Its that many of them could be as polarizing or political as recent news headlines! To put it bluntly, the interest in the infosec industry is growing rapidly and blurring the line between <a href="http://www.skydogcon.com/2016/09/the-con-vs-conference.html" target="_blank">professional vs. enthusiast</a>, "hacker/maker culture" and community. This interest and participation is welcome, but many newcomers are unfamiliar with longstanding norms and values which have cause more than a few...we'll say, active discussions.<br />
<br />
<h2>
THINK DIFFERENT?</h2>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/9KiYi-tx4v4/maxresdefault.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="800" height="200" src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/9KiYi-tx4v4/maxresdefault.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Inspired from repetition of "No, thats a terrible idea. Think of something different!" by various core team members, the theme became obvious! Even better, it takes us back to the roots of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hacker_culture" target="_blank">"hacker culture"</a>/<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maker_culture" target="_blank">"maker culture"</a> and the values to explore, innovate, and hack! We think different!<br />
<br />
<h2>
WHATS IN STORE?</h2>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
SkyDogCon is just as much for the newcomer as it is for the enthusiast or professional.</blockquote>
<div>
For newcomers to SkyDogCon or CONs in general, know that though many here are infosec professionals this is not a strictly professional conference. SkyDogCon is just as much for the newcomer as it is for the enthusiast or professional.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
SkyDogCon and "hacker culture" bring together a diverse group of individuals with the purpose of sharing their knowledge and passion with the community. This community values lively but respectful discussion, self-responsibility for actions, and meaningful contribution to others in the community. If you're new or unfamiliar, just <a href="https://www.defcon.org/html/links/dc-faq/dc-faq.html" target="_blank">ask</a>! Don't get touchy if someone corrects or offers input!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We've got an awesome lineup of speakers, activities, and villages lined up and can't wait for you to experience it! </div>

Brent will be sharing his vast pentesting experience and try to keep us out of the potholes and problems he has seen.<br />
<br />
<h2>
Abstract:</h2>
The sample of common mistakes that we are providing can cause problems on both sides of the table, but can ultimately end up affecting the client in a negative way. Allowing these to occur also prevents the ability to provide a realistic view of a company’s security posture. This could also lead to a future compromise, or even avoiding detection of a previous compromise—which can of course lead to a whole other set of issues for them. If you are interested in a more accurate view of your state of security, and wish to be better prepared against real world attacks, preventing any of these issues is certainly a step in the right direction!<br />
<h2>
<br />About Brent:</h2>
<div>
Brent is an Sr. Security Consultant at TrustedSec. He is the founding member of the Nashville DEF CON group (DC615) and is also the coordinator for the DEF CON conference “Groups” program. He has held the role of Web/Project Manager and IT Security Director at the headquarters of a global franchise company as well as Web Manager and information security positions for multiple television personalities and television shows on The Travel Channel.<br />
<br />
He has also been interviewed on the popular web series, “Hak5” with Darren Kitchen, BBC News, and on Microsoft’s “Roadtrip Nation” television series. Brent has also spoken at numerous security conferences, including DEF CON, DerbyCon, ISSA International, SaintCon, PhreakNic, SkyDogCon, NolaCon, various B-Sides conferences, Techno Security & Forensics Con, TakeDownCon, Appalachian Institute of Digital Evidence (AIDE) conference at Marshall University, and more.<br />

<h2>
Fuzzing Workshop</h2>
<h3>
Description: </h3>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-weight: normal;">@AdamOfDC949 will be giving a free workshop to
introduce people to the joys of fuzzing.
This will be a practical, hands on workshop on how to use existing tools
like AFL to find bugs in binaries. After
going over basic usage, we’ll have everyone get their fuzzers going on “real
world” software. While the CPUs churn
away, we’ll talk about some of the internals of AFL, coverage driven fuzzers in
general, and learn how to read the statistics and troubleshoot issues such as
performance issues, not finding any new paths, and so on. If there’s enough
time and interest, we can also go over how libFuzzer works, and maybe even
KLEE.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<span style="font-weight: normal;">By the time we’re done, you should be able to start fuzzing
Linux programs in a matter of minutes (as long as they take file input and exit
after processing the file), compile with Clang/LLVM, use persistence mode, and
know when it’s time to find more seed files, prune the existing set, or try a
new approach altogether.</span></div>

computer. If it’s running Linux, you should be good to go. If it’s not, get
some VM software (e.g. VirtualBox) and make sure there’s enough RAM and disk
space to put an Ubuntu VM on there. No
need to have prior fuzzing experience, no need to know assembly or how to
reverse binaries (though that’d help once we find a bug). Being able to read C code would be helpful
for the experimental features, but isn’t needed for basic usage.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Bob works with ClearedJobs.net and sees hundreds of resumes every month. Bob will offer his experience to help all of us find our next sweet job.<br />
<br />
<h3>
Abstract: </h3>
Despite the fact that Cyber Security / Info Sec professionals possess skills that are in great demand- in many cases operating in a negative unemployment environment (meaning more open jobs than qualified people) successfully landing a great job is not always a guarantee. This talk will help turn great cyber pro's into great job seekers as well.
Advice on hiring trends and best practices in this talk are based on years of interviews and interactions with recruiters and hiring managers (predominately Info Sec or IT focused) at events such as BSides in San Antonio, TX and Augusta, GA as well as and multiple Cyber/InfoSec Specific Job Fairs recently held in San Antonio, TX, Huntsville, AL, Baltimore, MD and Washington, DC.<br />
<br />
<h3>
About Bob: </h3>
Bob Wheeler works with recruiters and hiring managers in the government contracting and private sector cyber security community to help employers locate and connect with niche talent through the ClearedJobs.Net and CyberSecJobs job board and job fair services.
Bob has authored numerous articles for job seekers, recruiters and employers which have been featured on sites like RecruitingDaily and RecruitDC.org as well as the ClearedJobs.Net Blog.
He's been a featured speaker at BSides Augusta, GA, RecruitDC, Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) events and has moderated and/or participated in multiple panel discussions featuring recruiters and job seekers.

He will be presenting his views on what's next for all of us in the security industry. Everyone who is planning on working past 2025 should be listening to this talk.<br />
<h3>
Abstract:</h3>
The information security field has been booming for years, and in the past few years, some experts have begun speaking about the field being in a bubble that will inevitably burst. As the field continues to booms, jobs continue to grow, new technologies continue to emerge, many have begun to view some of these calls as just doomsayers and pessimists. But what happens if they are right? What if there is actually something to their words? What does a world without many of us doing our current jobs look like? Should we start considering our next careers now? What is next?<br />
<br />
<h3>
About Joey:</h3>
Joey / l0stkn0wledge is a life-long hacker and has worked in information security for the last 11+ years. His work has covered certifications and compliance, research and development, and penetration testing. During his time, he's worked at the lowest levels of an organization up through management. He brings his own interesting perspective to every presentation and tries to not only present the problems but bring something that resembles a solution too.<br />

Joe brings a unique view on cargo cults and how it has spread into computer programming.<br />
<br />
<h3>
Abstract:</h3>
"Richard Feynman introduced the concept of cargo cults into science and the idea has subsequently spread into computer programming. Based on an actual phenomenon observed in the Pacific Islands, cargo cults attempted to to replicate rituals that appeared to bring gifts from the sky without understanding what the rituals actually did or how they worked. Replacing knowledge and comprehension with ritual and belief leads to failure in the Pacific, science, programming, and security.<br />
<br />
This talk is aimed at being entertaining and informative rather than deeply technical and covers the history of and differences between actual cargo cults, cargo cult science, and cargo cult programming and how the ideas of cargo cult programming can be seen in security operations and testing. It concludes with describing a technique called the reference interview used by reference librarians to attempt to make sure that their users answer the correct questions, something that can help fight cargo cults in the workplace"<br />
<br />
<h3>
About Joe:</h3>
"I've worn many hats in IT, including web application development and system administration, DevOps, Security Operations, and Web Application Penetration Testing and Vulnerability Management. I'm focused on testing and working smarter and helping people understand<br />
the underlying concepts rather than relying on ineffable processes and<br />
procedures."<br />

The Internet of Things is the modern wild west. Unpatched IoT systems are everywhere and are connected to the Internet. Nancy and Phoenix will give us a new view on something we are all aware of.<br />
<br />
<h3>
Abstract </h3>
"An IoT device is made up of 5 different components: the hardware, webapp, mobile apps, network communication and API. Hacking an IoT device requires looking at each component individually, as well as looking at the whole picture. In this talk, husband and wife team — Nancy and Phoenix Snoke — go through the process and findings of hacking an actual IoT device: a baby monitor. Both general methodology and specific examples will be presented. This talk concludes with tips for setting up your own IoT device hacking lab. Note: As there has been no response from the manufacturer of the device we are not disclosing the manufacturer and model number or other identifying information of the IoT device."<br />
<h3>
<br />About Nancy and Phoenix:</h3>
Nancy and Phoenix currently run their own cyber security consultant firm, MagickSecurity LLC. In the past, Nancy has been Senior Software Engineer at PGAC responsible for web application security, and a penetration tester for Cisco Systems. Nancy has previously spoken at Derbycon, NOLACON, and Bsides. She got her undergraduate degree in Computer Engineering at Tulane University in New Orleans, and her Masters in Computer Science at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. From the same twisted mind that put EBCDIC questions into Hacker Jeopardy last year, the SkyDogCon Wrangler has designed a new challenge for SkyDogCon 7.<br />
<br />
Two player teams will visit 5 stations around LoungeCon and have to solve a puzzle or pick a lock and answer a trivia question in order to improve their Poker hand. Failure to complete one of the two items will be rewarded with a crappy card, and failure to complete both will be quite unsavory.<br />

Sign up for the Hacker Poker Run will open one week before SDC7. <br />

James will be giving us insight into tightening up our home networks.<br />
<br />
<br />
Abstract:<br />
Home networks used to be simple and manageable. Today, to do things right, you need to be a network and security team all in one. Come with me on a journey from a simple flat insecure network to something better. Something that is manageable, secure, and defensible for the users. A network that is, for the builder, a lab for learning and developing skills.<br />
<br />
About James:<br />
James “GrayRaven” Powell is a product security analyst at Cisco Systems. He has been a professional in the Information Technology space for nearly 20 years. James spent the first seven years of his career as a system and network administrator before moving to the dark art of programming. Three years ago he stopped dabbling and tumbled down the security rabbit hole. His late career move into Information Security gives him a perspective of the gap between IT and IS. He actively develops in C and Python while looking for a good excuse to write more Perl. During his downtime, James can be found practicing martial arts, brewing beer and mead, or writing.<br />
